SOETERD FESTIVAL
SUMMER 2025
The Soeterd Festival is currently a dream in the making. We are gauging interest in such an event. The initial feedback, particularly from potential visitors, art professionals, and artists, is very enthusiastic. We are considering 3 to 4 landscape art pieces in the National Park or other special locations on the island, and 10-15 art installations in churches and prominent buildings. On this website, we provide an insight into our plans for the Soeterd Festival, with a selection of possible locations. However, these locations have not been finalized yet. We are already in discussions with many stakeholders, while others still need to be approached.
NATIONAL PARK
DUNES
OF TEXEL
The National Park Dunes of Texel is a unique natural area encompassing an extensive dune landscape along the west coast of the island, from the southern tip near Den Hoorn to the northern lighthouse at De Cocksdorp. Established in 2002, the park covers approximately 43 square kilometers.
It hosts a rich variety of flora and fauna, including rare plant species and bird breeding areas. Texel's dunes are shaped by wind and sea, providing a dynamic landscape that is constantly changing.
In addition to its natural beauty, the park also offers recreational activities such as hiking, cycling, and birdwatching, making it a popular destination for both nature lovers and tourists.
MONUMENTAL
HERITAGE
Texel boasts a wealth of monumental heritage, including historic churches, forts, and bunkers. The churches on Texel are characteristic landmarks of community and history. Perhaps most striking is the white church of Den Hoorn, dating back to the 15th century. With its prominent white tower visible from the ferry, it welcomes visitors upon arrival on the island. One of the most iconic landmarks is the lighthouse located at the northern end of the island. This red and white tower offers panoramic views of the sea, dunes, and the island itself.
The military history of the island is also well represented, with various forts and bunkers dating back to both the Napoleonic era and World War II. Fort De Schans on Texel, built under the leadership of Prince Maurits of Orange in the 17th century during the Eighty Years' War, served as a defense against sea invasions. Bunker Loodmansduin on Texel is a relic from World War II, part of a defensive line built by the Dutch army. During the German occupation, it became part of the Atlantic Wall.
DISTINGUISHED
PLACES
Texel is rich in cultural landscapes and distinguished places that highlight the island's unique history and natural beauty. Between Den Burg and Oudeschild lies the Hoge Berg on Texel, a striking undulating landscape distinguished by its typical Texel garden walls and sheep shelters, making it a living example of the oldest landscape on the island.
The harbor of Oudeschild, on the east side of the island, is a lively place full of maritime history. This harbor, essential for fishing and recreation, built around 1780, connects the island with its maritime past. The Tower of the Fonteinsnol, an observation tower in the middle of the forest area, offers a magnificent view of Texel's varied landscape. Since 2016, the Wezentuin in Den Burg has had a transparent stage with movable glass walls. This versatile stage provides space for performances, exhibitions, and small productions.
